Best USFL Football Team Ever
For the purpose of this article I am strictly referring to the United States Football League (USFL) that existed for three seasons during the 1980's. If you were a sports fan from 1983-1985 you probably remember the USFL pretty well. It was one of the few professional football leagues besides the NFL that rose to some degree of prominence and respectability.
The USFL of course went out of business after a more or less failed attempt to collect anti-trust damages from the NFL but that doesn't mean that they did not create a legacy during their brief existence. There were plenty of incredible USFL teams out there. The New Jersey Generals were loaded with the talents of Doug Flutie and Hershel Walker in addition to plenty of other great players. They never made it to the USFL championship game but they were a force on the field.
The Michigan Panthers won the first USFL championship trophy but soon went out of business. The Arizona Wranglers and Oakland Invaders also had some great post-season moments.
With all that in mind, who was the best USFL team? Which team was the greatest USFL team ever? I have some thoughts and I suspect a lot of fans of the former league would feel the same way.
The Philadelphia / Baltimore Stars were the best United States Football League team ever. Why do I say that? We'll I generally love Philadelphia sports teams in general but that isn't the only reason or even the most important. The Stars existed in all three USFL seasons. During those seasons they had great, great success during the playoff season. They never lost one single playoff game and were a highly respected team around the league.
During the USFL's three seasons of play, the Stars played in all three Championship games. They lost the first game to the Michigan Panthers and then won the next two to the Arizona Wranglers and the Oakland Invaders. Few teams in any professional sports make it to three title games in a row and perhaps the Stars would have been a USFL dynasty with more consecutive titles if the league had existed past the 1985 season.
The Stars also left an NFL legacy. Head Coach Jim Mora went on to a respected NFL career as head coach of the Indianapolis Colts and New Orleans Saints. Stars, star running back Kelvin Bryant played in the NFL as well as punter Shawn Landetta and linebacker Sam Mills. I'm sure I'm missing some other players and front office staff that graduated to the National Football League.

Eagles Fire Juan Castillo Defensive Coach 2012
As of today's date the Juan Castillo's replacement will be Todd Bowles. Bowles was the defensive secondary coach for the Eagles.
Castillo was a offensive line coach until head coach Andy Reid decided to move him to defensive coordinator. Moving Castillo from offense to defense was full of controversy. Coach Reid was derided for putting what seemed to be an inexperienced person into a major NFL defensive role. At times Castillo seemed to struggle in press conferences on in on field decision making regarding the defense. Since day one as defensive coordinator, Castillo's performance was heavily scrutinized. It was said that to make up for his lack of experience, Castillo was working long, long nights and days putting together on the field defensive schemes and preparing for game day.

What are my thoughts? I think Reid had to finally do something to begin to shake up the Eagles 2012 season. Some early disappointing losses in the 2012 season likely put Reid's job in jeopardy and he had to make a move that I suspect also involved input from Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie.
Philadelphia fans should be relieved to have an NFL coach with experience on the defense. Some might argue that the Eagles secondary hasn't been living up to it's potential and that Eagles former secondary coach Todd Bowles might be a controversial decision as well. Overall, I think the team is due for a change and this is a move in the right direction.
On a side note, given Andy Reid's loyalty to his staff and his occasional stubbornness, the firing of Juan Castillo was very unexpected. I figured Castillo would be demoted and eventually buried, but employed, within the Eagles organization.

Where Do The Eagles Play? Lincoln Financial Field Review
Each NFL team in the league plays its games in massive stadiums that hold thousands of fans, security, food staff, drink staff, coaches, players, maintenance, and a variety of other people that make a National Football League great.
There are many stadiums throughout the league and some are better than others. For those who grew up in the Philadelphia area you probably remember when JFK stadium and Veterans stadium were around. You probably think of them with some fond nostalgia but you probably don't miss them either. Catch a college game and JFK and you were a million miles from the field. It was a giant park with seating tiered so far away that you couldn't see much of anything if you got tickets far back from the action.
Veterans Stadium wasn't much better. I know that players and staff don't miss it. The astro turf was brutal as was the seating. "The Vet" , was designed to be a multipurpose stadium when it opened in the 70's. It was meant to showcase baseball games,football games, concerts and whatever else sport or event came along. The result was that no event was ideal to see in Veterans Stadium. The design of the facility tried to accomplish too much and as a result, accomplished little.

If you experienced the Vet and Haven't been to Lincoln Financial Field you are in for a treat. It is a terrific place to show case Philadelphia Eagles football at its best. There really is no bad seat in the place. Compared to The Vet, the games feel tight and intimate. This, of course, can be a problem if you are around unruly fans, which can happen in Philly. It is a tough town and their fans are even tougher. This stadium brings all that element closer together but as I say, take things with a grain of salt, be kind and all should be good... with some luck :-)
The field has come a long way too. No more astro turf. I can't say I've maintained any statistical record of this but I feel as though players suffer far less turf-related injuries at Lincoln Financial field (ie "The Linc") For this reason, I have to love this place even more. Football is a brutal game. No use making it worse with shoddy fields where guys can get hurt.
Getting to the Linc is real easy. Access from I 95 and 76 (ie the dreaded Schuylkill expressway :-) is pretty simple as far as directions go. Tons of traffic can does cause some delay while waiting to pay for parking, which is quite expensive so make sure you remember to bring extra loot for parking ( a cost I always seem to forget about until I get there ).
Parking is set up pretty well and you can usually get a spot within reasonable distance to the field. Keep in mind though there are tons of tailgaters out there partying it up in the lot so they might have spots claimed early.
So.... Where do the Eagles Play? That is, I should say...... Where do the Philadelphia Eagles Play? At Lincoln Financial Park in South Philadelphia.

How to Change Passworld on MLB.TV
Changing or updating your password on MLB.TV won't be something you have to do everyday but every so often it helps to change your log in information. You might update your login for security purposes or simply to make your passcode more easy to remember.
Steps to editing your Major League Baseball television login password is as follows:
Step 1
After you log in click "My MLB.TV" at the top of the page
Step 2
Click "Profile" in the options that drop down
Step 3
Under "Account Information" you'll see the word "Password" Click "Change"
Step 4
Go ahead and change your password and save changes.

How to Cancel MLB.TV Subscription
Cancelling your MLB.tv subscription is not super easy to do. In the frequently asked questions (FAQ) sections on MLB.com / MLB.tv they will tell you that you can log into any page and then find "MY MLB.com on any page at the top right corner and click on it. At least on my account, this is not accurate. You can look for MY MLB.com but you might not find it. I certainly can not see that link on when I am logged in.
If you had the same problem that I had cancelling my account, do not fret. I figured out the problem.
What you really need to find is the world "Welcome!" in the upper right corner of their web page.
When you click on "Welcome" a drop down menu will appear.
Then, in that drop down menu, click on "Audio / Video Subscriptions"
You'll be taken to the "Audio / Video Subscriptions" page.
Click the "Cancel Subscriptions" button
Now.... couple fine points you should remember and watch out for.......
You will be taken to a second page. There is a drop down menu where you'll be asked why you want to cancel. Choose your reason (mine was all the freakin' blackouts!)
Then read the information in the check box below the 'reason' drop down menu. Before checking the box make sure you are aware of the correct button to click. If you want to stop your MLB.tv subscription AND you DO NOT want it to AUTOMATICALLY renew, be sure to click the "Cancel Subscription" button
If you want to automatically renew the following year (why the heck would you want to do that if you are closing your account now is a mystery to me but if you are renewing next season ) click "Cancel this season, but automatically renew next season" Again, do NOT click this if you want to close your account.
I highly recommend going with the simple "Cancel Subscription" You can always manually renew next year if you change your mind. If you go with the other button and let your account auto-renew and then cancel it after 5 days it goes back into effect, you'll still be charged for the balance of the month (with monthly subscriptions) or the balance of the season (for full season subscription) depending on which plan you select.

AAA Minimum Minor League Baseball salary 2012
How much do minor league baseball players earn in salary for 2012? AAA baseball players are just one step away from playing in the Major Leagues. Major League Baseball (MLB) is the highest level of professional baseball. Only the most talented and luckiest of ball players make it to the MLB. Their salaries are enormous. AAA players are in a league one step below the MLB and they are hoping for their big chance to play big league ball.
The mistake a lot of people make is to presume that since AAA players (or AA or single A for that matter) are so close to the big time that they must be making a lot of money. After all, if MLB players earn millions of dollars yearly on average you’d think AAA players make a few hundred grand a year, right?
Actually, they make a lot less than that. Players at the AAA level earn a minimum of $2150 per month in 2012 presuming it is not their first year in the league. If it is their first year in the league, the number is much less.

Sometimes the bottom is not so bad though. Take professional baseball for example. Pro baseball players in the major’s make a ton of money. Even the guys who earn the MLB minimum salary earn a lot of money.
Major League Baseball players who are at the bottom of salary scale got a really nice raise in their paychecks starting in 2012. The collective bargaining agreement between Major League Baseball and the players association was agreed upon in December 2011 and it provided a substantial increase in salary for the guys who make the minimum amount of money.
Players on the Major League level who are the league minimum now make roughly $480,000 per year (up from $414,000 last baseball contract). I have to admit, even the minimum salary in baseball is a really sweet paycheck.

Some players also receive considerable signing bonuses when they are drafted by a MLB team, though such bonuses only represent a small amount of players drafted. The vast majority of these make very little money. I did a post on this as well

Slugging Average Percentage Ranked By MLB Position Played
For example, Matt Kemp, a respected Dodgers power hitter in 2011 has managed a .497 (or thereabout) over the past seven years. A very a good slugging stat. A typical slugging percentage for a Major League Baseball player is around .420 or .430. Get in the .490 range and you are really whacking that baseball.
Just for the controversial fun of it. Let's look at Barry Bonds. Bonds was notorious for attitude and performance enhancing drugs but he did slam that ball. Barry Bonds slugging percentage was somewhere around .607, which is a totally ridiculous number steriods or not.

Which positions in MLB baseball have the highest slugging average? Do MLB first basemen have higher slugging numbers than shortstops? Which postions tend to hit the far the farthest and get the most bases out of it?
I ranked from best to worst the average slugging percentage for every position in Major League Baseball. I found it impossible to find this statistic broken down and ranked by fielding position so I did my own calculations to produce this ranking. Basically, I took individual batting statistics (approximatly400 at-bats and up) from ESPN's site and sorted all those players by position. Then I added slugging percentage stats together and did the division to get an average slugging percentage by position. Then I entered into an Excel sheet and ranked from best position (on average) to worst.

Here are the rankings. These include both NL and AL stats combined. I omitted the pitchers due to lack of at bats and we all know they'd rank last anyway:
1st Base (1b) - .476
Right Field (RF) - .467
3rd Base (3b) - .457
Left Field (LF) - .443
Catcher (C) - .442
Designated Hitter (DH) - .438
Center Fielder (CF) - .431
2nd Base (2b) - .425
Shortstop (SS) - .404
Absolutely no surprise that 1st base ranked #1 in slugging percentage. 1st basemen are your classic big guys that hit the long ball. They are noted more for power than fielding ability.
Right Field at first surprised me but when I thought about it, these are strong guys too. Right Fielders are noted for arm strength (throwing the ball long distances). Perhaps this translates to power at the plate as well?
Shortstop finishes up last. No surprises here either. One of the most important defensive fielding positions in baseball, Shortstops are often hired more for their fielding ability than for hitting.
Designated Hitter shocked me. You'd thing they are out there tearing up the ball but according to these numbers, they are not. Surprisingly, the DH mediocre on all other batting stats as well.

Average On Base Percentage OPB by MLB Position

This post will show you the average on base percentage ranked by position in Major League Baseball. For the life of me I could not find average batting statistics by position on-line so I thought I would generate my own from some available numbers. I basically generated the stats by taking the most active 2011 players individual statistic (I thanks ESPN, stats linked here, for those raw, individual stats) and entered them all into an excel sheet by position. Then I broke out the OPB numbers for each player by position, added them together and created an average. Then I ranked the positions from highest on base percentage to lowest. I omitted the pitcher.

Who Sang in The 2012 AFC Championship - Steven Tyler
OK, Steven Tyler, singer of the American rock group Aerosmith, sang the United States National Anthem during the 2012 National Football League AFC Championship game.
The NFL's AFC championship game was a great professional football playoff game. The two teams opposing each other were the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens.
I was rooting for the Ravens. Joe Flacco went to college in the tri-state area and like most NJ, PA, Del sports fans, we are partial to 'local' athletes. Because of Flacco, I had reason to Root against Tom Brady's Patriots.
During the national anthem I managed to find an even bigger reason to root against New England ..... their stadium security.
New England's stadium security should have arrested Steven Tyler before he got in the door but they botched the job. Someone in security must have known that Steven Tyler would butcher the National Anthem. Tyler's immediate arrest would have been justified in preventing such a horrid rendition of US anthem.
Hot Buys on Great Ladies NFL Texans Tank Tops
I'm kidding of course. Sure, Tyler was there because the NFL invited him, as well as paid him I presume.. No one, not even Simon Cowell would have stopped him at the door.
I love hard and heavy rock, but I can't think of a situation where a hard rock singer has ever done a stellar job singing the National Anthem. Sure, some rockers have a good vocal range, can hit those high notes and have occasional vibrato like an opera singer but melodic songs like this one just are not a good fit for their talents. Steven Tyler's grainy voice against the Star Spangled Banner was like sandpaper on a baby's bottom. The combination of Tyler and "Oh, Say Can You See" made him sound like he needed some cold medicine. That owl screech he made didn't help either.
I shouldn't act surprised though. Sadly, the second he stood on stage I knew how the performance would turn out. Some things are not meant to turn out. Lee at Gettysburg comes to mind.
Next time he puts down an American Idol guest, I'll roll my eyes.

Someone in security must have known that Steven Tyler would butcher the National Anthem. Tyler's immediate arrest would have been justified in preventing such a horrid rendition of US anthem.

I'm kidding of course. Sure, Tyler was there because the NFL invited him, as well as paid him I presume.. No one, not even Simon Cowell would have stopped him at the door.
I love hard and heavy rock, but I can't think of a situation where a hard rock singer has ever done a stellar job singing the National Anthem. Sure, some rockers have a good vocal range, can hit those high notes and have occasional vibrato like an opera singer but melodic songs like this one just are not a good fit for their talents. Steven Tyler's grainy voice against the Star Spangled Banner was like sandpaper on a baby's bottom. The combination of Tyler and "Oh, Say Can You See" made him sound like he needed some cold medicine. That owl screech he made didn't help either.
I shouldn't act surprised though. Sadly, the second he stood on stage I knew how the performance would turn out. Some things are not meant to turn out. Lee at Gettysburg comes to mind.
Next time he puts down an American Idol guest, I'll roll my eyes.

A really neat statistic in baseball is the slugging average / percentage. It gives hitters credit for the amount of extra bases they hit over the course of the season. Basically, it measures how much of a 'slugger' a player is. Read on to learn how to Calculate Slugging Average Percentage in Baseball

- 1 First, you need to determine how many bases a player has reached for each at bat. A single equals one (1) base. A double two (2) bases, a triple equals three (3) bases and a home run equals four (4) bases
- 2 Take the amount of bases a player has reached during the course of the season and total them together. For example, if a player batted 10 times with two singles, one triple and seven strike outs, he would have reached a total of 5 bases. 1 (single) + 1 (single) + 3 (triple) = 5 bases.
- 3 Then determine, how many times the player has come up to bat. Using the example above, let's presume he batted 10 times.
- 4 Then, divide the total number of bases reached, by the total 'at bats' and you'll have the slugging percentage.
- 5In this case you would divide 5 by 10 for a slugging average/percentage of .500 (5/10=.500 slugging average)
- 1

The Difference Between Major League Baseball Minimum Wage and Minor League Lowest Salary 2011
The difference in salary between a Minor League Player and a Major League players is a lot of money. Both MLB and the minor leagues have set minimum salaries that a player can earn in each respective league.
The MLB minimum salary ranges in the hundreds of thousands of dollars each year. The minor league baseball ( AAA ) salary ranges only in the tens of thousands of dollars.
According to CBS sports ( http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/story/14446065/minimum-salary-raised-to-414000 ) the MLB minimum salary that a player can make is $414,000. Currently, for 2011, a minor league baseball player who is part of a forty man team or has played at least one game at the Major League level can make a minimum of $67,300 per year.
The difference in salary between a MLB minimum wage and minor league minimum wage is $346,700 per year.
This is an increase from last year. I linked a bookmark below that delves a bit into the pay increase from 2010 to 2011. Check it out.

What is the Difference in Salary Between Quarterback and Punter in the NFL ?
What position you play in the NFL really has a big impact on how much money you make in the National Football League.
Without a doubt, quarterbacks on average make a lot more money than other positions. This shouldn't surprise anyone. It is universally accepted (at least I think it is :-) that the quality of your quarterback will determine the kind of season your football team will have. I can't think of any example where a championship team had a consistently lousy QB.
Punters and kickers, while vital, tend to make the least on average. My guess is that this is due to supply and demand, as well as the amount of playing time they put in on the field (not very much). They also have longevity on their side which may contribute to their smaller paycheck. Playing more years, which adds up to more paychecks, which adds up to more money in the long run, etc.
I posted an article that goes through all the average salaries by position in the NFL. There are some pretty interesting revelations. Check it out. You'll see the difference in salaries for QB and Kicker/Punter plus all the other positions.
