How to Make Coffee In Bunn O Matic Coffee Pot

Making coffee in a Bunn o Matic coffee pot is easy to. I am going to describe how to make a pot of coffee using a Bunn coffee maker. This article is best suited for people who are using a Bunn coffee brewer that gets its water supply directly from nearby plumbing. In other words, you press a button and water dispenses into the coffee funnel and into the pot automatically. There is no need for your to pour water into the machine yourself. This is also referred to as “direct water feed”

This article presumes that you already have the coffee maker professionally installed and properly plumbed into your water line.

This works best with Bunn equipment but might help you with other versions as well.
Here’s how to make the coffee.

Step 1

Pull Out the coffee funnel (which is that try that holds the filter and ground coffee). Discard old filter and coffee and put a new clean filter in the funnel.

Remove Coffee Funnel
Add New Clean Filter

Step 2

Put coffee in the brewer. Use the recommended amount of coffee. I use a 10 cup coffee maker so I use those pre ground and measured packs, usually 1.50 ounce packs (figure range of 1.25 to 2.25 oz works for 10 cup maker)

Step 3

Put the funnel with the new coffee filter back into the brewer where you got it from.
Step 4

Put an empty coffee pot on the burner beneath the funnel where the coffee will dispense. Make absolutely sure that the coffee pot is empty. Most , if not all, plumbed in Bunn brewers pour the correct amount of coffee into the pot by using a timer. If the pot is half full already, the brewer won’t know when to stop and it will spill over.

Step 5

There is a switch on the front of the coffee maker that turns the burner beneath the pot on. The switch lights up when it is on. Turn it on so that the burner beneath the pot will start to warm up.

Step 6

You don’t have to wait for the burner to warm up. The water will come out of the Bunn O Matic really hot to begin with. Press the black rocker switch on the front of the unit (near the burner switch) and you’ll hear the water begin to flow.

Step 7

Wait for the pot to fill up and serve.

Thanks for checking out this coffee tip on TurtleDog's Blog.  I really appreciate it.  Please read some of my other posts related to food, home, computers, and more. Thanks again!

Why Poured Water Won't Come Out Bunn Coffee Machine Brewer

Pour Over Chamber Lid (Closed)
I have to start off with a disclaimer that I don't represent bunn or claim and expertise on repairing Bunn-O-Matic Coffee machines. That said, as a coffee drinker I have used this kind of equipment heavily both to drink coffee and for professional, work purposes so I do have some knowledge on the topic ;-)

It sounds as though you have poured water through the screen at the top of your Bunn Coffee Machine and no water is coming out. There are a number of possible reasons you are not seeing water fill the coffee pot but only one that I can speak with any remote expertise (and I mean really, really "remote" expertise) and that your issue is related to how you are filling the tank.

The Model Of The Brewer
If you are using a model C Bunn coffee maker you definitely need to directly pour your own water in the equipment at the top of the machine as opposed to running it directly from you plumbing. All or most of the plumbed versions (CT, CTF, CWT, CWTA, CWTB, CWTF, CWTFA, CWTFB Single CW, Single CWF) I believe all have a 'hatch' at the top that will allow you to water directly into the machine.

Get Free Water Filtration Cooler Systems or Bottle Coolers

Bottleless Water Cooler
"Bottle Water Coolers" or "Bottled Coolers" are those water coolers with those big tanks or jugs on top.  If you haven't seen them at your own workplace, you may have seen them in movies where workers are standing around them gossiping about the boss or whatever.
5 Gal Jugs For "Bottle" Coolers

"Water Filtration Cooler Systems" is really just a fancy way of saying water cooler  that do not have the bottle on top of them.  Don't mistake these water coolers for those old junky, metal water fountains you'd find down the hall of some hospital or bus stop. These coolers look just like the coolers with bottles described above but they, of course, have no bottle. Water comes from your local plumbing but this cooler has a filter system that cleans the water.

There are ways to get these bottle and bottleless fountains for free.  We'll sort of....

The ones with the jug on top you can definitely get for free or for very little rent if you drink lot of water.  Keep this in mind if you are buying these on behalf of a  company or  institution (maybe even your home ) where you are using a lot of water bottles.  If you plan use a lot of water bottles, shop around and ask local bottled water companies how many bottles a month will you need to buy in order to get a cooler unit or units at no charge.  Their money is made by you drinking water and paying by the bottle. They are in the business of selling bottled water. They might 'give' you the fountain in exchange for knowing you'll buy  a lot of water fromthem. If plan to purchase jugs frequently, ask them upfront if you can get a unit for free (no rent).  You might get lucky and get one at no charge versus buying one or paying rent.

Bottleless filtration systems... OK, I might be lying when I say you can get these for 'free.'  Bottless water filtration coolers you will never truly get at no charge. Companies that provide this equipment make a profit both selling and renting these units.  That said, renting one might be the better alternative to spending a lot of money upfront to buy.

Is free possible? Maybe. If you are a charitable institution, a poor school or some organization that can generate  some public sympathy, you might be able to get the cooler company to waive the charges if they can get some good PR (public relations) out of it.  I can't promise this though.

No charge or not, before you go and spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars up front for this type of water fountain, check into renting first. You might be able to rent at a fraction of the cost of purchasing.

If you are going to need multiple fountains, negotiate the rent to a lower price.  Also try to get the installation charge for free and see if they will do the filter changes for free. Make sure any service charges come at no charge.  Negotiate, negotiate. Don't be afraid to ask.

Need some help with negotiating?  Here are some tips to keep in mind

So, OK, which is better to buy or rent or whatever? Is a bottless cooler better than a bottle cooler?  I wrote an article on the topic and linked it here. I have a lot of experience with both types of water systems. Check it out and see what is right for you to have in your home or office

Get New Tab to Right of Current like Mozilla on IE 8

One Internet question I get often but can not seem to answer for everyone, including myself, is why won't Internet Explorer allow me to open a new tab just to the right of the current tab when I click on a link. Put another way, the question is "Why can't I open a link in a new tab instead of a new window popping up on my screen.

The answer that works for some people, but not me and many others is:

Open Internet Explorer

Click Tools at top of your computer screen

Select Internet Options at bottom of drop down window that appears beneath tools

"General" Tab

"Settings" button ... there are three (3) settings buttons. Choose the one at the bottom in the "Tabs" section.

From here, it gets a little controversial.  There are a couple routes you can choose that work for some and not others. Here are two ways to go

-Under the "Open Links from Other Program" you can choose the radio button "A new tab in current window" This is the most logical choice and, paradoxically, seems to be the one that works the least for most people. It seems to work for some but not others.

-Another option, that works for many more people, just not everyone, including me :-) is less logical, but seemingly way more effective..... under "When Pop Up Is Encountered" click the radio button "Always Open Pop Up In New Window"

Guaranteed Fix:

Lot's of folks have had great success with the above info but unfortunately many have not.   It is kind of weird. The GUARANTEED WAY to open a new tab and not have a new window pop up is to 1) simply right click on the link you want to open and 2) Select Open a New Tab in the options that appear
Pain in the butt.  If you have a fix to this issue, let me know in comments below and I'll be glad to update this post. Until then, I'll use the right click method or simply just use Mozilla where the tabbed browsing automatically allows a new tab to appear to the right of the current tab.

How to Repair a Hole / Pothole in Concrete Floor

Repairing a damaged concrete surface

It seems that cracks and holes in concrete flooring are as inevitable as the sun rising in the morning. I wrote an article on fixing cracks but here's one on fixing holes. Please read on to learn how to Repair a Hole / Pothole in Concrete Floor

  • PVA building adhesive
  • Mortar trowel
  • Repair Mortar
  • Small Paint Brush
  • Broom or dust brush
  • SAFETY GLASSES

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

    • 1
When you find the hole, clean out loose debris and dust and take a small paint brush and apply white general purpose PVA building adhesive into the hole. This will help the repair mortar stick better
    • 2
Put any debris you took out of the hole back into the hole. Then inspect the area around the hole. Are there any more pieces that were once in the hole still around?
    • 3
If you have the pieces pick them up and put them in the hole. Don't put them in there as if you are putting a jig saw puzzle together. Put them loosely in the hole. If you can find the pieces, use any old gravel, concrete pieces or other hard filler that will not compress
    • 4
Once you've filled the hole. Put some safety glasses on (safety first always! :-) and hit the filler with a hammer so that the filler is not sticking up over the top of the hole. Essentially, just pack it down a bit.
    • 5
Take a brush or broom and brush away any dust or fragments laying around the outside of the hole (but keep your filler in the hole of course :-)
    • 6
Take a small paint brush and apply white general purpose PVA building adhesive on to the top of the filler. This will help the repair mortar stick better
    • 7
Following directions on the packaging, mix your quick setting repair mortar.
    • 8
Using your trowel, fill the hole and cover the filler with the mortar. Then use the edge of the trowel to level it flat so that it is level with the rest of the floor.
    • 9
Let it harden overnight. Then get a chair, a cold drink and sit by the hole and admire your work! :-)

How to Check Candy Thermometer Temperature Accuracy

Be Sure Confectioner Thermometer is right

From time to time, especially when using another person's candy thermometer, you want to test how accurate it is. Read on to learn how to Check Candy Thermometer Temperature Accuracy

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

    • 1
Find a kitchen pot that is big enough to fit your candy thermometer. Be sure that the pot is large enough to boil water.
    • 2
Fill the pot with enough water so that you will be able to put your thermometer in the water. I usually use hot water out of the faucet as it helps it boil faster.
    • 3
If you haven't already put the pot on your oven range and put on high flame.
    • 4
Let the water come to a good rolling boil, then put the thermometer in the boiling water. Be careful not to touch the water as you will burn yourself if you do.
    • 5
If you are at sea level, the candy thermometer should read 212 degrees Fahrenheit. If it does not read this temperature, you'll now be able to do the 'mental' adjustments in your head
    • 6
Be sure to subtract 1 degree for every 500 feet above sea level.

How to Make Best Boneless Shoulder Blade Pork Roast Recipe Easy

How to Make Best Boneless Shoulder Blade Pork Roast Recipe Easythumbnail
Make Best Boneless Shoulder Blade Pork Roast Recipe Easy

This is a great and easy way to cook a pork roast. Please read on to learn how to Make Best Boneless Shoulder Blade Pork Roast Recipe Easy

Difficulty:
Moderately Easy

Instructions

    • 1

Begin to preheat the oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit
    • 2

Put the pork roast in a pan as shown. If it has netting on it, keep the netting on. Don't cut it off until the pork has been cooked.
    • 3

Put holes in the pork by plunging a steak knife about an inch or two into the roast. I put about 5 or 6 holes throughout the pork roast about two inches apart from each other.
    • 4

Push peeled garlic cloves down into each hole in the pork shoulder blade roast. When you cook the pork recipe , the garlic flavor will be spread more evenly throughout the inside of the pork. Very delicious
    • 5

Then fill the rest of the hole with either whole rosemary or chopped rosemary . Like the garlic, this technique will give your best pork recipe a good internal rosemary flavor. I'll sprinkle some rosemary, salt and pepper on top too. Delicious seasoned flavor .
    • 6

Then take a piece of tin foil large enough to cover pork and top of pan. Press a thermometer through the center of it, then press the thermometer a couple inches into the pork at it's thickest part. Be careful not to plunge it into one of your holes or you won't get an accurate reading. Be sure it is plunged into pure meat. Press foil down over pork and sides of pan.
    • 7
Cook for about 30 minutes a pound. A typical roast can take anywhere from 1.5 hours to 3 hours. The key is to watch thermometer and use commonsense. At 175 degress you should be good to take the pork out... but not if it's only been in the oven a half hour. If that's the case, may have set your thermometer into the pork wrong.
    • 8
Take out the pork roast when done and let it stand 15 mins before carving. I ALWAYS check the pork to be sure it is cooked enough through when I carve it. Undercooked pork is very dangerous. Watch your time, temperature and always inspect the pork as you cut it. No blood, red juices or red meat on outside or inside.

Make Delicious Easy Simple Pork Chops for Dinner

This recipe is so easy and delicious. Very little preparation and lip smackin' good :-). Please read on to learn How to Make Delicious Easy Simple Pork Chops for Dinner

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

    • 1
First, set your oven for somewhere around 360-375 degrees.
    • 2
Buy some good, thick, juicy pork loin chops and place in pan as shown in above picture. Be sure to get the chops with the bone, they are much more flavorful and work well with this recipe.
    • 3

Use a fresh garlic clove and crush over the chops using a garlic crusher. If you don't have a crusher, chop with a knife first. Use more or less depending on your preference (fresh garlic is very strong). If you don't have fresh garlic, use powdered instead.
    • 4

Use fresh or packaged rosemary (the seasoning that looks like pine needles). Spread a pinch or two on each chop. Rosemary goes a long way and is delicious. Put a pinch or two evenly on the chops and you'll get great flavor.
    • 5

Once oven has heated up, put the chops in for 40-45 minutes. Then remove and eat. You'll love it.

things you'll need:

  • 1 cup slivered almonds
  • 1 cup, 2 sticks unsalted butter
  • 3 tbsp water
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp corn syrup (I used dark, you can use light if you prefer)
  • 3/4 tbsp salt
  • 6 oz bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
    • 1
Completely line a 13" x 9" by 2" pan with tin foil and spread 1/2 cup of slivered almonds evenly across
    • 2
Take the other half cup of almonds and finely chop them. Set aside.
    • 3
Now, the next step in this recipe is to make the toffee mix. Get out a pot and put on medium high heat. Rub unsalted butter on the sides then put two sticks into the pot and let melt.
    • 4
Add 1 cup sugar, 3 table spoons water, 1 tbsp of corn syrup (dark or light... I used dark) and 1/4 tbsp of salt. Stir it up and bring to a boil, then reduce to medium heat.
    • 5
Continue to heat on oven and stir frequently. Put in candy thermometer. When the mix reaches 290 degrees F, take off the oven and pour evenly in pan over the almond slivers. (Not Sure if Your Thermometer is Accurate? Calibrate it by Clicking Here)
    • 6
After a few minutes, spread finely chopped bittersweet or semi sweet chocolate evenly over the toffee mix. Let it sit long enough for the chocolate to melt evenly over the mix
    • 7
Then put into the refrigerator for an hour or two. Long enough that it cools hard. This picture isn't so great, but for those of you with eyes of a true chef, I did not let the chocolate melt long enough (oops) before putting into frig. Still tasted great though

Difficulty:

Instructions

    • 1
Measure out 1/4 cup kosher salt, 1/2 teaspoons allspice seasoning, 1/8-/1/4 cup brown sugar (I used the dark brown but some use light), 1 quart vegetable stock ,1/2 tablespoon black peppercorns and 1 teaspoon allspice seasoning
    • 2
Pour 1/4 cup of water into a large pot. Take all the ingredients above and stir into the pot. This is the key ingredient that will give your chicken breast that great juicy flavor
    • 3
Put on medium high heat stirring occasionally until it begins to boil.
    • 4
Take off flame and let it cool to room temperature, then put into refrigerator until it gets cold (couple hours or so)
    • 5
I then take about 1 cup to 1/2 quart of water and ice it pretty good. Then I add the ice water to the brine mix. It helps add a little more stock so that your chicken breasts will be fully submerged
    • 6
Fully submerge chicken breasts into the brine. Then keep refrigerated for 1 to 3 hours.
    • 7
Take out of fridge, season to taste. I add a little garlic and rosemary or thyme. Don't add any salt though. The brine already has the salt in it.
    • 8
Then cook in oven as you would your favorite chicken breast recipe

How to Get Rid of Kitchen Grease

Properly Remove Kitchen Grease

If you are like the rest of us, when it comes to kitchen grease you probably fall into one of these categories : 1) You dump it down the drain or 2) You throw it in the trash. The latter is the right way but read on for the most efficient way on how to get rid of kitchen grease.

Difficulty:
Easy
You'll Need:
  • Small metal can
  • Lid for the metal can or even a small plastic bag that you get at the store will work.

Instructions

    • 1
Hi! Ok, the last thing you want to do is dump the grease down the drain. Why? Because grease tends to solidify and harden and will block up your household drains and possibly your sewage. Believe me, you don't want that to happen (yuck and peee- u )
    • 2
Find yourself a metal can or glass jar. A peanut jar, beer can, soup can, pretty much anything you can get from the recycle bin
    • 3
When you cook something real greasy or fatty like bacon, a lot of liquid fat will build up in the bottom of the pan. It is most pourable when still hot, so while hot, carefully pour the contents into the metal or glass can/jar you found. Don't use a paper or cardboard jar or you'll face an Exxon Valdez-esque disaster. Plus you may get burned so be careful.
    • 4
Consider putting a paper towel or old newspaper under the can/jar when you pour in case some oil misses. If you have a lid, cover the can/jar with the lid.
    • 5
If you don't have a lid, don't worry. You don't need it. What I do after the grease cools a bit is, believe it or not, put it into the freezer. I find that the grease hardens faster and more reliably this way. Keep reading :-) ....
    • 6
Once it gets hard, it won't spill as much when you put it into the trash without a lid. Nor will it spill as much if you use a glass jar and it breaks in the bag.
    • 7
Since grease is hard, it will less likely find any holes or tears in the bag and make a mess by leaking into your trash can or onto your floor.
    • 8
If you insist on having a lid, but don't have one, you are still in luck. Wait until the oil cools. Take a ball of old newspaper and pack it into the top of the jar. The newspaper will help absorb some of the oil that spills. ALSO, take a small plastic bag (I use plastic grocery bags) and put the jar into the bag and tie tightly. Double bag if it makes you feel better.
    • 9
Then put grease into the trash. Your home's plumbing is saved and that unsightly grease is out of the way

Butter.... ahhh... the all important ingredient in so many recipes. You've got to love it, but not too much or too little or you'll throw your recipe out of whack, here are the essentials....
    • 2
Use a measuring spoon or if you have a kitchen scale you can lay wax paper on it and measure that way. Another way is to 'eyeball' the amount and just take the portion of the butter stick necessary by eye... see below...
    • 3
      1 tablespoon of butter = 1/8 of a stick = 1/2 of one ounce
    • 4
2 tablespoons of butter = one ounce or 1/4 of a stick
    • 5
4 tablespoons of butter = two ounces or 1/2 cup = 1/2 of a stick
    • 6
32 tablespoons butter (yeah, this would be a workout if you used the measuring spoon, instead use..) 4 WHOLE sticks = 16 ounces = 1 pound = 1 full cup .
    • 7
Hope that helps! I really hope you enjoyed my article on how to Measure Butter for Cooking Recipes

How to Seal / Store Coffee Grinds and Beans for Best Cup Ever

Keep Coffee Beans Fresh

How to Seal / Store Coffee Grinds and Beans for Best Cup Everthumbnail
Seal / Store Coffee Grinds and Beans for Best Cup Ever

Hi! Storing your favorite coffee grinds and beans properly is easy to do but we often get it wrong. Most of us drink coffee or espresso or some sort of caffeinated java. Sealing and storing beans will insure best cup of coffee. Please read on to learn How to Store Coffee Grinds and Beans for Best Cup Ever

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

    • 1
First, keep in mind that the best coffee beans or grinds to buy in terms of storage quality is coffee sold in a sealed air tight bag similar to the one shown in this Ehow.
    • 2
Coffee loses it's freshness as it comes in contact with oxygen. When you reseal the bag, first completely flatten it from tight against the top of the beans all the way to the opening of the bag. Get as much air out as possible! Flatten it as you would if you were flattening a roll of toothpaste.
    • 3
Then, continuing our quest for the best brew of coffee ever :-), roll the bag down tight, real tight, until it is pressed against the coffee beans or coffee grinds (or espresso beans or espresso grinds if that was your choice)
    • 4
Remember, as little air as possible. Sealed down properly your bag of coffee / espresso beans or grinds will look like this. This is well sealed
    • 5
Next, but very important ... here's where everyone goes wrong .... Do NOT put the coffee in your refrigerator or freezer. You do NOT want to refrigerate or freeze it. Why? If your bag is not sealed tight, the cold gets on the beans and they lose freshness way faster than room temperature
    • 6
Why? If your bag is not sealed tight, the cold gets on the beans and they lose freshness way faster than room temperature. If exposed your won't get the best cup of coffee ever :-)
    • 7
Finally, put your bag of coffee in one of your kitchen cabinets. This will allow for optimal storage. Thanks for reading my How to Seal / Store Coffee Grinds and Beans for Best Cup Ever

How to Eat Healthy Food at Work

Easy Way to Eat Heathier Foods at Work

Every day at work I hear people complain about how overweight they are, then at lunchtime they'll run right out to eat a pizza or grab fast food. Here's a real simple way to eat healthy food at work, very cheaply, without taking too much time.

Difficulty:
Easy

Instructions

things you'll need:

  • Ideally, a workplace that has a microwave.
    • 1
I work Monday thru Friday. I want to eat healthy food at work , satisfy my appetite and avoid wasting my lunch break driving to unhealthy fast food stores or waiting for service at more expensive restaurants.
    • 2
Consider making up anywhere from a few days worth to a week's worth of lunch on Sunday night. I like to have my favorite healthy meats (chicken breast, of course, is a great option) as well as one or pieces of delicious fresh fruit.
    • 3
Pick something easy to make that you'll enjoy. Let's use boneless Chicken breast for example. On Sunday, preheat oven to around 350 degrees. Put 3 to 5 thawed chicken breasts depending on size in baking pan....
    • 4
Season with chopped or crushed fresh garlic and rosemary or thyme or any other ingredient you like. Other options include onions, chili powder, cumin, curry or even Italian seasoning works great....
    • 5
Put in pre heated oven for about 35 minutes uncovered. Take out and let stand for 20 minutes. If you are doing this for the first time, cut one of the breasts in half to make sure there is NO red or pink meat inside. If there is, put back into the oven and cook thru....
    • 6
After pan cools, cover top with plastic wrap or transfer breasts into a container and put into refrigerator. ..
