Instructions

    • 1
      First, step back and look at the plant. If you are outdoors, the Song of India can be six feet tall. If indoors, it could be a potted houseplant.

      Next, look at the shape of the plant. Do the leaves grow in clusters or whorls throughout the plant? Such grouping of leaves is very characteristic of this plant. They are densely spaced.

      Now, move in close to the plant. Look for leaves that are very narrow, about five inches long, and come to a point.

      Now, move in even closer to the plant and look at one of the leaves. Is the leaf variegated? That is, is it multicolored in various sections of the leaf? The Song of India will have variegated leaves, thick yellow border around the leaf with a green stripe running down the middle.

      Now, for the closest inspection....the trunk or trunks of this plant will appear narrow. "Leafless" portion of the trunk will be fairly short too.
